St Wulstan's Choir
Singing from the choir gallery every Sunday at the 10.30 Mass and accompanied by the organ, the choir contributes greatly to the liturgical life of the Parish, in accordance with the teaching of Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Vatican 2 Decree on the Liturgy): “Liturgical worship is given a more noble form when the divine offices are celebrated solemnly in song, with the assistance of the sacred ministers and the active participation of the people”.
Repertoire of choir and congregation
Our fundamental aim is simple: to enhance the liturgy by encouraging congregational singing. The choir alternates with the congregation in the singing of the Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.) and joins in with it in hymns and responses. Only during Communion does the choir perform a motet on its own each week. We are conscious of our links with Sir Edward Elgar and his family and are proud to use some of his smaller scale motets such as his Ave Verum, O Salutaris Hostia and Ave Maria.
We use both English and Latin within our repertoire and have recently introduced the singing of the Mysterium Fidei acclamations, the Great Amen and the Our Father. At the start of Advent 2013 we acquired “The Catholic Hymn Book”, compiled by the London Oratory. It best suits the liturgical style of St Wulstan’s and contains beautiful, traditional and well-known hymns, including some Latin ones.
Joining the Choir
If you would like to join or experience what it is like to sing in a choir, simply email saintwulstans@gmail.com or come up to the choir loft on a Sunday morning to enquire. All voices are welcome – a bigger choir means a wider repertoire. Music, like virtue, is its own reward but the Parish shows its gratitude by wining and dining us from time to time.
